The MHRA has issued new follow-up advice after an investigation found increased wear and corrosion risks with several cobalt-chrome modular-neck hip stem components.
The regulator says the dual-taper design creates two interfaces—between the modular neck and stem and between the neck and head—that may increase wear. The issue may be associated with adverse local tissue reactions and a higher likelihood of revision surgery in some patients.
Hospitals are advised to identify people with the specified implants and invite them for a virtual or in-person clinical review. Where symptoms or findings suggest a metal-related reaction, the notice recommends blood cobalt and chromium testing and cross-sectional imaging using MARS MRI or ultrasound according to local policy.
Decisions about continued monitoring or revision surgery should be made individually. Patients already being followed under earlier manufacturer recommendations may not need an additional pathway, and patients should discuss concerns with their orthopaedic team.
